Celebrate 200 years of Mexican Independence, in Santa Ana on Sep. 18 and 19

Sinaloa, where the recipe for El Pollo Norteno’s marinated, grilled chicken comes from

September 16, 2010 will mark the 200th anniversary of Father Hidalgo’s call (El Grito) for Mexico’s independence from Spain.

In Santa Ana, the Fourth Street Mexican Independence Day Festivities will mark this important anniversary, on September 18 and 19.  This has been a positive annual community event supported by the downtown businesses and the community for the past 21 years.  Click here to read more about this year’s Santa Ana Fiestas Patrias.

Salvador and Anabella Corona, the founders of El Pollo Norteno, came from a Mexican town 50 miles south of Guadalajara, called Ciudad Guzman.

The style of our marinated and grilled chicken comes from Sinaloa, a northwestern state in Mexico.  This is where our restaurants gets their name; El Pollo Norteno means, literally, the northern chicken. Read more…

Enjoy our Mexican breakfasts, which we call desayunos!

Published on July 18, 2010 by in Focus on our Food

Desayuno is how we say “breakfast” in Spanish.  Did you know we serve breakfast at El Pollo Norteño?  No, we don’t serve pancakes or waffles – but we do offer several delicious Mexican desayunos, including:

  • Chilaquiles – Chilaquiles are a traditional Mexican dish. Corn tortillas cut in quarters and fried forming the basis of the dish. Red sauce is poured over the crispy tortilla triangles, called “totopos.” The mixture is simmered until the tortilla starts softening. Eggs (scrambled or fried) are offered as delicious add-on, for only fifty cents more. The dish is served with our homemade rice and savory refried beans. Read more…

Mesquite is the key to great grilled chicken!

There are plenty of ways to grill chicken – and not all grilled chicken is equally delicious.  At Pollo Norteno we don’t just grill chicken, we do so using mesquite, which begs the question – what is mesquite?

Mesquite, which comes from the Nahuatl word mizquitl, is a leguminous plant of the Prosopis genus found in northern Mexico through the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Deserts, and up into the southwestern United States as far north as southern Kansas and as far east as the eastern fifth of Texas, where average annual rainfall is in excess of 40 inches.

Are tortas the best sandwiches ever?

Published on July 9, 2010 by in Focus on our Food

Have you ever had a torta?  No, it isn’t some sort of turtle.   Tortas are Mexican sandwiches, served on an oblong 6-8 inch firm, crusty white sandwich roll, called a bolillo, telera or birote.

“Telera” is soft, round bread; also commonly used is the Bolillo, a torpedo-shaped French roll with a thick and crunchy crust. Tortas can be served hot or cold. Common ingredients may include, but are not limited to:   Mayo, Beans, Lettuce, Tomato and  fresh homemade Guacamole mmm!!

Meat options:

  • Carne Asada ( beef steak)
  • Pollo (chicken)
